The Revd Timothy Finigan was educated at the John Fisher School, Purley and at Corpus Christi College, Oxford where he obtained a first in Philosophy and Psychology / studied for the priesthood at the English College in Rome and the Gregorian University where he obtained a licence in Sacred Theology, specialising in Patristics and the History of Theology, also gaining the Diploma in Latin Letters summa cum laude. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1984. He has extensive experience in Education, at various levels, and since 2004 has been a lecturer at St John’s Seminary, Wonersh, teaching Sacramental Theology.

The Meriol Trevor Lecture each year echoes the concerns of a notable Bathonian member of the Catholic Community whose scholarship on John Henry Newman made her well known but did not limit her interests. She was, among other things, a prolific and successful author. In some of her unpublished papers she wrote eloquently about the compatibility of faith and reason, modern science and biblical revelation. She had a keen sense of the profound truth of the Genesis accounts of creation, without being a 'creationist' in the popular sense of that word. In this year's lecture, Fr.Finigan will be aware of Miss Trevor's writings, as well as her extensive reading of others, as he explores contemporary interest in this area of debate.
